When To Get A Business Mentor: Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

When To Get A Business Mentor: Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

One of the most common questions I get asked as a small business mentor is when to get a business mentor. And my answer is always the same.

Earlier than you think.
Much earlier.

I know that’s not what most people want to hear.Because most small business owners come to mentoring when things have already gotten hard.

When the cash flow is in trouble.
When the clients have dried up.
When the stress has become unbearable.
When they have run out of ideas and almost out of time.

And while I will always do everything I can to help in those moments, the honest truth is that mentoring works best before the crisis hits.

Not after.

The Conversation That Changed How I Talk About This

A little while ago I sat across from a business owner who had been running her business for eight years.

Eight years of showing up. Eight years of hard work and dedication and genuine love for what she did.
And within the first thirty minutes of our session together I could feel my heart sinking.

Not because she wasn’t talented. Not because her business idea was wrong. But because she had waited too long. The debt had compounded beyond what we could quickly address. The cash flow had been critical for so long that there was no buffer left to work with. The client base had quietly eroded while she had been too busy keeping everything together to notice it happening.

We spent two hours together going through everything. And at the end of it I had to have one of the hardest conversations I have ever had in twenty three years of business. I had to tell her that I didn’t think there was enough runway left to turn things around.

She closed her business shortly after. Eight years of her life.

And I have thought about that conversation many times since. Because if she had come to me twelve months earlier. Even six months earlier. The outcome could have been completely different.

The problems were fixable. The business was salvageable. But not at that point. Not with that much time already lost.

Why Small Business Owners Wait Too Long

In my experience there are three reasons small business owners wait too long to ask for help.

1 – They think things will turn around on their own.

Hope is a powerful thing. And small business owners are by nature optimistic people. They have to be.

Starting and running a business requires an enormous amount of belief in yourself and in what you are building. But that same optimism can work against you when things start to slide. It is easy to convince yourself that next month will be better. That the quiet period will pass. That things will sort themselves out if you just keep pushing through. Sometimes they do. But often they don’t.

And every month you spend waiting for a turnaround that isn’t coming is a month of runway you are burning through unnecessarily.

2 – They don’t want to admit they are struggling.

There is still an enormous amount of shame attached to asking for help in business.
We started our businesses to be our own boss.To prove we could do it. So admitting that we are stuck or struggling or scared feels like proof that we can’t. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Asking for help is not weakness. It is the smartest business decision you can make. The most successful business owners I have worked with over the past twenty three years are not the ones who had it all figured out.

They are the ones who knew what they didn’t know and got the right support around them early.

3 – They think mentoring is only for businesses in crisis.

This is the biggest misconception I come across. The idea that mentoring is something you turn to when everything falls apart. When in reality the business owners who benefit most from mentoring are the ones who come before things get critical.

The ones who are doing okay but want to do better. The ones who can see they are approaching a growth ceiling and want help breaking through it. The ones who are making good money but want to make sure the foundations underneath them are solid.

Mentoring is not about fixing a broken business. It is about taking a good business and making it great.

Mentoring Is Not A Magic Wand

I want to be honest with you about something. Because I think it is important.

Mentoring cannot fix everything. I cannot manufacture cash flow that isn’t there. I cannot undo years of decisions made without a strategy. I cannot turn around a business that has been in crisis for too long with not enough runway left to work with.

What I can do is sit with you early enough to see what is coming before it arrives. Help you make better decisions while you still have the time and the options available to make them. Give you an honest outside perspective when you are too close to your own business to see it clearly.

Build a real strategy underneath your business so that the growth you are working toward is actually sustainable. But the key word in all of that is early. The earlier you come the more I can do. The longer you wait the fewer options we have.

How To Know When It’s Time

Here is what I know after twenty three years in business. You already know. You can feel it when something isn’t working. That quiet unease when you look at your numbers. That dread on a Sunday night before the week begins. That voice in the back of your head that keeps saying something needs to change.

That is not just anxiety. That is your instinct trying to protect you. And it deserves to be listened to.

So if any of the following sounds familiar it is time to have a conversation.

You are working harder than ever but not seeing it reflected in your income. Your cash flow feels unpredictable and stressful every single month. You know your marketing isn’t working but you don’t know how to fix it. You are burning out and you can feel it. You are making decisions based on panic rather than strategy. You have been saying things will get better next month for more than six months in a row.

You don’t need to be in crisis to reach out. You just need to be honest with yourself about what you can already feel.

What Happens When You Come Early

When a business owner comes to me before things get critical here is what becomes possible.

We can look at your numbers with clear eyes and without panic. We can build a marketing strategy that actually connects to your revenue goals. We can look at your pricing and make sure you are charging what your business actually needs to survive and grow.We can identify what is working and do more of it intentionally. We can identify what is draining your time, energy and money and stop it. We can build a plan that gives you clarity, direction and confidence.

None of that is possible when you are already in crisis mode. Crisis mode is reactive. And reactive is the most expensive way to run a business.

A Note To The Business Owner Reading This Right Now

If something in your business doesn’t feel right. Please don’t ignore it.

Don’t wait another six months hoping it fixes itself. Don’t wait until the debt is unmanageable. Don’t wait until you are so burnt out you can barely function. Don’t wait until there is nothing left to save.

Come and talk to me now. While there is still time to do something meaningful about it.

I have been in business for twenty three years. I have been through cash flow crises, legal battles, staff issues and moments where I genuinely didn’t know if things would turn around. I have also helped hundreds of small business owners build something profitable, sustainable and worth showing up for every single day.

I know the difference between a business that needs a strategy and a business that has run out of road. And I never want to have to tell another business owner that we’ve run out of road.

Don’t let that be your story.
