If you’re overwhelmed running your business right now, reading this at 11pm with fifteen tabs open and a head full of noise, I want you to know something first: you’re not doing it wrong. You’re just doing too much of it alone.
Overwhelm doesn’t mean you’re a bad business owner. It usually means you’re a business owner without a plan, trying to hold every part of the business in your head at once.
Here’s where to actually start untangling it.
Why Small Business Overwhelm Happens
Most overwhelm isn’t really about how much you’re doing. It’s about not knowing what matters most.
When you’re wearing every hat, sales, marketing, admin, finances, customer service, there’s no space to step back and think strategically. You end up reacting to whatever’s loudest that day, instead of working towards a clear plan.
I see this constantly with clients. They’re working long hours, doing all the “right” things, and still feel like they’re getting nowhere. It’s rarely an effort problem. It’s a clarity problem.
The Real Cost of Staying Stuck
Overwhelm doesn’t just feel bad. It costs you.
When you’re constantly firefighting, decisions get made from panic instead of strategy. You discount when you shouldn’t. You say yes to the wrong clients because you need the cash flow. You put off the marketing plan because there’s always something more urgent, and then wonder why sales feel unpredictable.
The longer overwhelm sits unaddressed, the more it compounds, financially, and in how you feel about the business you built. Sorting it out isn’t a luxury. It’s what protects the business, and you.
Three Things to Do Right Now
Before you book anything or spend any money, try this.
Get it all out of your head.
Write down every single thing that’s worrying you about the business right now. Don’t organise it. Don’t fix it. Just get it onto paper so it’s not all spinning in your brain at once.
Circle the one thing that’s actually urgent.
Out of everything on that list, most of it can wait. Find the one issue that, if solved, would ease the pressure the most. That’s where you start, not everywhere at once.
Ask yourself if this is a “you” problem or a “plan” problem.
Often what feels like personal failure is actually a missing strategy. No marketing plan means no predictable sales. No pricing structure means constant financial stress. That’s not a character flaw. It’s a business that needs a plan.
A Quick Fix vs an Actual Plan
It’s tempting to look for the one tip, template or hack that fixes everything overnight. I get it, when you’re overwhelmed, you want relief fast.
But hope is not a business strategy, and neither is a quick fix you found in a Facebook group at midnight. Real relief comes from a plan built around your business, not a generic one borrowed from someone else’s.
That doesn’t mean it has to be complicated. It just means it has to be yours.
Signs It’s Time to Get Outside Help
Sometimes a notebook and a clear head are enough. Other times, you need someone outside the business to see what you can’t.
You might need outside support if:
- You keep having the same problem, month after month. If it keeps resurfacing, the fix so far hasn’t addressed the real issue.
- You’re too close to the business to see the real issue. When you’re in it every day, it’s genuinely hard to see it clearly.
- You’ve tried figuring it out alone and you’re still stuck. That’s not failure, it’s usually just a sign you need a second, more experienced perspective.
- You want honest feedback, not more generic advice from a course or a group. Generic advice is easy to find. Advice specific to your business isn’t.
This is usually the point where business owners start searching for a business coach or business mentor. And here’s something worth knowing: you don’t have to sign up for a twelve-month programme to get that clarity.
What One Honest Conversation Can Do
I’ve been in business for 23 years. Retail stores, markets, restaurants, events, two ecommerce businesses I built and sold. I’ve paid staff wages, my own mortgage and my own tax, all while keeping a business relevant to the same client base as I’ve grown from 30 to 54 myself.
I don’t say that to impress you. I say it because when you’re overwhelmed running your business, you don’t always need a big programme. Sometimes you just need one honest hour with someone who’s actually lived the mess of running a business, not just studied it.
That’s what my Hour of Power sessions are. One hour, no onboarding, no course, no long-term commitment. Just an honest, focused conversation to help you get unstuck.
You leave with a transcript, a clear action list, and the option to book an accountability session if you want to keep the momentum going.
Here’s what a few clients have said after their session:
“My head was swimming with ideas and she really helped me put these ideas in order. Her honest feedback and enthusiasm for helping people really shines through.” — Shae Bilston
“A mentor who’s truly in the arena herself, bringing a rare depth of experience and insight… direct, honest, and practical advice.” — Brooke
“By the end of the session I was feeling all the more confident and had gained clarity on how to run effective business collaborations.” — Rabia Farhan
You Don’t Have to Carry This Alone
Overwhelm feels heavier when you’re holding it by yourself. You don’t need to have it all figured out before you ask for help, and you don’t need a big commitment to get some clarity.
Sometimes all it takes is one hour.
